CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Nathaniel Howe
CANON: Dragon Age
AGE: 36 (Word of God is that he is 30 during Awakening)
CANON POINT: Just after Dragon Age 2, after Hawke rescues him from the Deep Roads and he returns the favor by fighting against Meredith. He has embraced life as a Grey Warden and restored much of his family's lost honor by saving the life of Fergus Cousland.

BACKGROUND: Here
INCENTIVE/FIT: Recovery of all Howe family documents and artifacts that were lost or destroyed upon his father's disgrace. That, and he could really use a vacation and this seems like a nice place without Darkspawn or insane murderous factions trying to tear Kirkwall apart. Thedas has too much drama right now.

Nathaniel's sexuality is not very explicit in canon (so far), but during the course of events he never has expressed even a little interest in getting married/settling down or having children (though he does adore his nephew). I headcanon that witnessing his parents' troubled marriage has made him more or less vow never to marry or have children, and has greatly reduced his interest in women (despite his father being a monster, it is his mother he remembers coldly, so she may have helped turn him off women altogether). He may or may not have had that interest to begin with, since his polite flirting with Velanna seems to have purposes that have nothing to do with attraction (he likes driving her up a wall, and eventually she actually seems to start taking it as a compliment). There's even less to indicate attraction to men, but since intimacy with other men is said to be scandalous in Ferelden if it's not kept discreet (Inquisition codex says this) and he was raised as his noble father's heir, this doesn't really mean anything. So based on what little evidence there is, I've decided that Nathaniel likes to keep things casual and discreet and is more inclined to be intimate with other men, being highly allergic to “traditional” relationships like the one between his own parents.

He has spent enough time among the Grey Wardens that he is probably going to want a job. Since his talents run more on the martial side of things, he will join a police force or something akin, no doubt. He'd find it a nice change of pace from being a Warden, though after some time he might get a little bored.

SAMPLES:

One meme thread with a specific world state.

“I suppose I have nowhere else to be.” Nathaniel coughed into his elbow, ridding his lungs of the probably-imaginary residue of smoke from a very-on-fire Kirkwall. The representative helpfully handed him a thing of water—it as a type of container he was unfamiliar with, therefore “thing” was the best thing to call it—and he drank gratefully. There was a sweetness to water, when compared to the taste of smoke.

“Your sister is out of the city, then?” the representative asked, clearly concerned.

“Long gone, with my nephew.” Nathaniel cleared his throat and passed the waterthing back. “I think I'm overdue for some leave from the Wardens. The Warden-Commander is hardly one to argue with that. So long as I'm not leaving little Howes pitter-pattering about when I leave.”

The representative shook her head. “That won't happen, with the right precautions.”

“Good. Wardens aren't especially fertile anyway.” Nathaniel took out a handkerchief to wipe soot from his face. The last thing a child needed was for him to give them a bad father.

“You're taking this all in stride,” noted the representative.

Nathaniel snorted. “Cities have run on stranger things than sex. Politics, for example.”

The representative suppressed a laugh.

“So long as you really aren't about to parade me like a breeding hound,” Nathaniel said, referring to an earlier question she had addressed, “I think I could have a worse time with my leave. Should be relaxing—if you're telling the truth.”

“Transparency is our policy,” the representative said with a nod. “Every part of this is consensual.”

“And information about me and my doings is at my discretion?”

“Absolutely.”

“Somehow I think I'm still going to regret this.” Nathaniel rubbed the back of his neck, deciding the heat in his face wasn't just from the fires.

“Then we would prefer you to decline,” the representative said seriously. “If you're not ready--”

Nathaniel waved away the rest of what she was going to say. “No-no, that's not what I mean. I just...I was raised to be a gentleman. That's all.”

A smile spread slowly across the representative's face. “That's...really adorable, if you want my opinion, and also very encouraging. It means you'll respect the situation as much as we do, for you and your partners.”

“Then I'm in.” Nathaniel wiped his face again. “As soon as I've made myself any kind of presentable, I mean.”

ANYTHING ELSE? Nathaniel carries his grandfather's bow. This is an heirloom he will refuse to part with, and he will jump through whatever legal hoops he must in order to keep it.
