He takes a breath, shaking his head. "Plenty of mages have a minor ability to heal, but it's the spirit healers, the ones who can work so much more, that are rare. I'd wonder if there was a way but I'm trying to avoid any system that involves finding mages. The... The young man I will be teaching, he's asked for Creation lessons especially so there's a chance he could go that way, but spirit healing doesn't just rely on having a lot of strength in Creation. It also requires a spirit willing to work with you, and that's quite the process."
Breakfast gets finished and he looks at his empty plate. He'd been rather hungry, apparently. After a beat he gets up... and obediently stretches out in bed again. Nate's looking after him. That's a luxury and he should remember that.
"The mage also has to be willing to work with a spirit. There are plenty of mages who are too scared to do so because it's been driven into their head how easy it is to become an abomination. We have... We have so much baggage. Sometimes I think the task ahead is insurmountable. And then I remember that I got out of Kinloch Hold and I'm no longer possessed so there's still a chance."
Nate starts clearing up the dishes, putting any leftover ham and fat on the floor for Lady to devour.
"I know the difference between healing and spirit healing is that I'm alive right now," he muses. "I also know that in most cases, any magical healing would suffice where conventional healing did not. Maybe an order of magical healers, so that any critical case might be sent up the ladder like with any other organization. Naturally this would mean most of your spirit healers would be requested to deal with some nobleman's gout, but that is the way of things."
Purrelden drops down from her place on Anders' pillow to paw at a small piece of the ham left out, which thankfully Lady doesn't seem to notice due to having the larger piece.
Anders relaxes and sighs. "It's a good idea, but I've already got to get people thinking about an order for all mages that somehow doesn't threaten the nations of the south and doesn't get trampled the moment there's a new Divine. I need the common people to feel like they've got equal access as a noble to a gifted healer should they need one, because I need them on our side rather than scared of us. Somehow. It's a massive issue." Even thinking about it can be exhausting, but he needs to start writing soon. Tomorrow.
No worrying means nothing serious and analytical, nothing on the structure of an organization or politics. Anders contemplates the options before smiling.
"How about the cheap Hard in Hightown ripoff, Desperate in Darktown?" It's about several criminals down there, rather than the noble and gallant guard captain. Anders prefers it, honestly. "I like the romance more."
This book has been an embarrassment on Nathaniel's shelf unless he's reading it with Anders. He grabs it, kicks off his shoes, and climbs into bed with his husband. He doesn't begin reading until Anders is settled cozily against him, as he belongs.
Anders gets comfortable with Nate, closing his eyes and wrapping his arms around his husband, prepared to listen through Nate's chest.
"I think we were in chapter seven, last time," he says. As Nate starts to read, Anders listens... and starts drifting back to sleep slowly. He's not used to laying down for so long and the mattress, blankets, and Nate make a dangerous combination.
