Quite the opposite. Cade didn't want to touch him or be touched by him. That was the problem, apparently. I'll talk to Anders about treating grown patients the same as his child patients if you'll talk to your man about...
[A sigh. This is hard. Anders is his husband and his subordinate both. He knows why someone might fear Anders. He knows why Anders reacted how he did. And he wishes he could express professionally the things he knows privately, that Anders would never hurt anyone under his care as a healer. But it would be like fighting a fire with a teaspoon.]
The situation is that you have a man who is so afraid that he would rather kill than be touched. It hardly matters by whom.
[Well, at least it was something understandable James wisely kept to himself, because as far as he had been able to discern, these two men were married now. Why anger a senior Warden when he was already angry? Still... ]
No, he would rather be killed than touched by one particular mage healer. [Is his calm reply.] I will speak to him, and the other Templars, about avoiding Anders in the future.
That--Commander, that may not be possible. At least, it's not plausible. He's one of three such healers who are here. They may not be able to avoid him if he's the only one on duty, as he was here. Trying to avoid him won't cause anyone any good and telling them to do so will reinforce their fears instead of quelling them. When Anders destroyed the Chantry, he committed a crime of monstrous proportions and it can scarcely be exaggerated. But before and after that, he lived like a pauper in the worst place in the world I can think of, healing people who couldn't afford healing and asking nothing of them. He starved rather than refuse to help people. When people hear of the monstrous thing he did, they ignore the good that the rest of his life has been spent pursuing, and they decide he must be a monster. And the consequence of creating a monster is that there are men like Cade who are too afraid to seek the healing they need, and without Anders, they might not get that healing at all. That is a problem, and encouraging it is a disservice to your man.
[Hmmmmmmph. There is a faintly grouchy sounding grunt.]
My fellow templars - they know they cannot touch him - they cannot touch any mage here, whatever colors they are wearing. I can keep them from laying hands on them, by word and deed, if necessary. I cannot stop what is in their hearts, Senior Warden. I can ask them to look for the Maker's guidance, and Andraste's forgiveness, but I cannot make them not see the death of one of the most honored faithful.
Anders is an excellent healer - I .. have seen the proof of it myself. I know it is not in his nature to show kindness to Templars after what some of my kith have done to him, but it would go a long way if he could meet us halfway. In turn, I will ask my people to do the same.
You are very much wrong, [Nathaniel says incredulously.] It is in his nature to show kindness to everyone, even Templars. What do you think he was doing, as insistent as he was with your man? He has more than met you halfway--he has been healing your people for well over a year now, and asked nothing of them but to listen to an occasional self-righteous tirade. What, exactly, does halfway look like, if not unprejudiced, attentive service? Keep in mind how delicately you handle your man Cade, when Anders has likely suffered no less and is at least as troubled.
From my understanding, he threatened to glyph Cade into place if he moved again. [Faintly dry.] I am not trying to underscore his kindness or his ... sacrifice. I am merely asking him to not engage with them, if they do not wish to be engaged with. He has every right to serve them with as much compassion as he has -- but they have every right to say no.
[Even more dryly.] Although I am fairly certain most of them would not care if they were healed by a nug if they had been sliced open.
As for Cade ... [he is not going to go into Cade's business, but to say.] As the Wardens have helped Anders heal, I am trying to do the same for Cade. He will be reprimanded, and if you demand satisfaction, you and Anders will have it. However I will not force him to seek medical attention from Anders. He has to come to it on his own.
From what I've gathered - that is when Brother Jehan stepped in. Luckily for all parties, he had a cooler head. He reported it to me immediately, and I have gone ahead and opened communication with you and with Anders, as this is both a Grey Warden and a mage to templar manner.
[See? Absolutely Going By The Book. Even though he sort of wants to bang Cade and Anders heads together and state that they are fighting for the same damned side and to get over themselves.]
Like I stated, I will reprimand Cade for not going up the chain of command properly - and for Anders own safety - I do not want him to heal Cade. I will ensure that he is not in trouble for it either.
I believe so. You are in a position of authority and he respects authority. As long as you are coming at him as a Senior Warden and not as Anders's husband.
That is precisely what I intend to do. And I want you to be there as well. If there is the possibility of an abuse of magic, it is worth investigating fully, even if only to prove it false.
He's your man; you give him the invitation. And let him know exactly who I am and why we are talking to him, and that you will be there as a witness. I don't want anyone to feel persecuted. We'll have to talk to Anders as well. This isn't a dire issue but it is an issue, and we need to hear both sides before deciding on a course of action.
